In the intricate world of photography, achieving sharpness throughout an entire scene can be challenging, especially when dealing with varying focal points. Fortunately, focus stacking is a technique that allows photographers to merge multiple images, each focused on a different point, into one cohesive and sharp composition. In this guide, we'll explore the step-by-step process of focus stacking using Photoshop, helping you master the art of capturing every detail in your scenes.
Steps to Focus Stack an Image Using Photoshop:
-> On-Location Shooting:
Capture multiple photos of the same composition at different focal points on location. This ensures that you cover all elements in your scene, from foreground to background, to achieve comprehensive focus.
-> Lightroom Selection:
In Lightroom, choose one of the photos from your focus stack series that you wish to edit. This will serve as your starting point for the focus stacking process.
-> Copy and Paste Edits:
After editing the chosen photo, copy all the settings to apply them to the other images in your focus stack. In Lightroom Classic, navigate to the left-hand side of your screen, click Copy > Check All and Copy > select other images > Paste.
-> Open as Layers in Photoshop:
Select all the photos you intend to focus stack. Right-click and choose Edit in > Open as Layers in Photoshop. This action opens all selected images as individual layers in a single Photoshop document.
-> Auto-Blend Layers in Photoshop:
Ensure all layers are selected, then go to Select the layers in the group and choose Edit > Auto-Blend Layers. In the dialog that appears, select Stack Images and, optionally, turn off Content Aware Fill Transparent Areas. Click OK. This step seamlessly combines the focused areas from each layer.
-> Save and Return to Lightroom:
Finally, save your image in Photoshop and send it back to Lightroom. This completed, focus-stacked image now boasts sharpness throughout the entire scene, showcasing every detail you captured during the on-location shoot. With the newly focus-stacked image, I have chosen to apply a few more masks to the edited photo.
Mastering focus-stacking in Photoshop opens up a world of possibilities for photographers seeking to achieve unparalleled depth and sharpness in their images. By following these straightforward steps—from capturing multiple focal points on location to seamlessly blending them in Photoshop—you can elevate your photography to new heights. Experiment with this technique to bring out the details in your scenes and create visually stunning compositions that leave a lasting impact!
