Writer: Jalen ObanJalen Oban

Over the course of my photography career, many things have changed. My camera gear, recording equipment, and skills have all evolved. However, amidst these changes, one constant remains: my editing software of choice, Adobe Lightroom.

I've been a loyal user of Lightroom since the beginning, and today, I'm excited to share with you 10 invaluable tips that have significantly enhanced my editing workflow. These tips are sure to make your life much easier when editing your photos.

  • Rearrange Modules: One feature that has been a game-changer for me is the ability to rearrange modules in Lightroom. This simple adjustment has greatly improved my organization and workflow, allowing me to customize Lightroom to suit my specific needs.

  • Solo Mode: Enable Solo mode to streamline your editing process by automatically collapsing other panels when you expand a new one. This helps keep your workspace clean and focused, enhancing productivity.

  • Point Color vs. HSL: Understanding the difference between Point Color and HSL (Hue, Saturation, and Luminance) adjustments can greatly enhance your editing capabilities, offering greater control over color manipulation.

  • Clipping Indicators: Pressing “J” or clicking the arrows on the histogram reveals clipping in highlights and shadows, helping you identify areas of overexposure or underexposure in your images.

  • Numeric/Arrow Keys for Precise Edits: Utilize the numeric keypad or arrow keys for adjustments to achieve finer control and precision in your edits, ensuring optimal results.

  • Sharpening Masking Visualization: Hold down the Shift key while adjusting sharpening to visualize the areas of the image that will be affected, allowing for selective sharpening and enhanced image clarity.

  • Custom Background Colors: Personalize your Lightroom workspace by customizing background colors to suit your preferences, creating a more comfortable editing environment. This also helps when trying to figure out how to display your image. The color behind the photo can make a huge difference!

  • Radial Gradient and Negative Dehaze: Explore the creative possibilities of radial gradients and negative dehaze adjustments to enhance sunlight effects and add depth to your photos.
